Germany Opportunity Card (Latest Update)

Have you heard about the Germany Opportunity Card? The Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a Job Seeker Program to attract skilled workers outside the European Union (EU). This program allows Job-seeking applicants to come to Germany for 12 months to look for a Job. Hence, applicants do not need a Job offer or permanent employment contract in advance.

You can apply for the Opportunity Card online or through your country’s German Diplomatic Mission. The Opportunity Card is similar to the German Job Seeker Visa but has more flexibility and longer validity.

Applicants from all non-EU countries can apply for the Opportunity card. This card allows you to work part-time for up to 20 hours weekly. To qualify, you need 6 points, assessed based on your education, age, experience, language skills, etc., for a smooth application. Further details about the German Opportunity Card are below.

Understand the Points-Based System and the Requirements to Qualify for the Germany Opportunity Card

According to the points system, you must obtain at least six points to receive the Opportunity Card.

The Points system is based on:

  1. Education
  2. Language Skills
  3. Living Expenses
  4. Experience
  5. Previous Visit
  6. Spouse Qualification

1) Vocational Training or University Degree

  • Vocational Education: You must have completed Vocational Training with a duration of at least two years and be state-recognized in your country.
  • University Degree: If you have obtained a University degree, you can also apply.

2) Language Skills

You must have either English or German Language skills. At least level A1 (basic, beginner level) in German or level B2 (Advanced) in English. You can learn German or English from many online learning Apps and websites such as Babbel, IELTS, TOEFL, Preply, Goethe.

3) Proof of Funds for Living Expenses

Since you have to live in Germany, that requires Food, accommodation, and other expenses.

  • Show Proof of Savings: As of 2025, the total required amount for a full year is €13,092 in a block account.

4) Work Experience

If you can prove that you have at least 2 years of experience, then you will get 2 Points in the last five years

  • 1 Year = 1 Point
  • 2 Year = 2 Point
  • 3 Year =3 Points

5) Previous Visit to Germany

If you have previously stayed in Germany for more than six months in the last five years, then you will get 1 point.

6) Spouse Qualification

If your spouse is interested in the opportunity card, both can receive additional points together. You can prove your relationship through a Marriage Certificate. Your spouse should also meet the basic requirements of the Opportunity Card.

How to Apply for the Germany Opportunity Card?

There are two ways to apply for the Opportunity Card.

  1. Apply Online for Germany Opportunity Card (Available for some countries)
  2. Apply through the German Embassy/Consulate

Go to the Official website of the German Federal Foreign Office (link: https://digital.diplo.de/chancenkarte). Select your country, and it will display the information. If the online application is not available for your country, then you need to contact the German Embassy in your country for the application process. Make sure you meet all of the above requirements.
