
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is pleased to announce the re-advertisement of forty (40) vacancies for the position of Apron Controller Trainee. This opportunity forms part of KAA’s ongoing commitment to developing skilled aviation professionals capable of supporting Kenya’s air transport infrastructure and ensuring operational safety across its airports.
Established under the KAA Act Cap 395, the Authority is responsible for the provision, maintenance, and management of airport facilities throughout Kenya. KAA operates major international and regional airports including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Moi International Airport (MIA), Eldoret International Airport (EIA), Kisumu International Airport (KIA), Wilson Airport, and Malindi Airport.
Role Summary
The Apron Controller Trainee will undergo intensive on-the-job training to support the safe and orderly movement of aircraft on the apron. Upon successful completion of the one-year training program, candidates may be considered for permanent and pensionable employment based on their performance and assessment outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
The selected trainees will be equipped with skills and responsibilities including:
- Regulating aircraft entry and exit on the apron through radio telephony for safe traffic flow.
- Marshalling aircraft to and from parking bays during arrival and departure.
- Conducting Foreign Object Debris (FOD) inspections to prevent airside hazards.
- Operating Visual Docking Guidance Systems (VDGS) and passenger boarding bridges.
- Driving and operating Follow-Me Vehicles to guide aircraft.
- Recording aircraft movement data in the Airport Operations Database (AODB) and Daily Aircraft Movement Records (DAMR).
- Enforcing ICAO and IATA airside safety regulations and best practices.
- Monitoring and reporting incidents or hazards including oil spills and equipment malfunctions.
- Supervising safe refueling operations on the apron.
- Coordinating the safe movement of passengers, ground vehicles, and equipment in apron areas.
This role is mission-critical to ensuring on-time performance, safety compliance, and smooth ground operations across Kenya’s busiest airports.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C (Plain), or C– (Minus) for candidates from marginalized groups, minority communities, or persons with disabilities.
- A Certificate in Airport Operations will be an added advantage.
- Previous experience or knowledge in Ground Flight Safety is desirable.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in computer applications.
- Age Requirement: Not older than 26 years (born on or after 1 January 1999). For candidates from marginalized groups and persons with disabilities, the age limit is extended to 28 years (born on or after 1 January 1997).
Terms of Appointment
- The position will be offered on a one-year training contract.
- Successful trainees may be absorbed into permanent and pensionable roles based on training outcomes and organizational needs.
