Applications are open for the 2025 edition of Africa’s Data Future Fellowship, a three-month virtual programme designed to nurture the next generation of leaders in the continent’s evolving data governance landscape.
Spearheaded by the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA), this initiative targets aspiring professionals and changemakers eager to contribute to Africa’s digital and data policy transformation. Through intensive mentorship, expert engagement, and hands-on learning, the fellowship empowers participants to influence how data is managed, shared, and protected across the continent.
The 2025 cohort will consist of five individuals, each representing a different African region: North, West, East, Central, and Southern Africa. Fluency in English is essential, though candidates from Francophone countries with intermediate English skills are encouraged to apply. Throughout the programme, fellows will delve into topics such as data interoperability, ethical data practices, AI regulation, public digital infrastructure, cross-border data transfers, and responsible innovation. Sessions will be held online and require a commitment of two hours weekly, including bi-weekly virtual dialogues with industry experts.
Successful participants will receive a stipend of $1,500 at the end of the fellowship, subject to completion of all programme requirements. Each fellow will also be expected to produce a policy paper addressing a pressing issue within one of the programme’s core themes and present their findings during a final workshop. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with peers and sector leaders across Africa, gain visibility through CSEA’s communication channels, and join a growing Pan-African professional network focused on responsible data use and policy development.
Eligible applicants must hold a postgraduate qualification and have at least one year of relevant work experience in fields such as social science, law, technology, or public policy. A strong interest in digital governance and access to a stable internet connection and computer are required. Selection will be merit-based, and all applications must be completed in English and submitted online. Required documents include a filled application form, a two-page résumé, a brief statement of motivation (no more than 200 words), a concise explanation of a data governance challenge relevant to your region and chosen theme (up to 300 words), and a writing sample, such as a policy brief or research article.
This is a rare chance to shape the continent’s digital future—apply today and become part of a transformative journey in data governance.
