The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship — Doctoral (CGRS D) program recognizes and supports the next generation of outstanding innovators, knowledge workers, creative thinkers, and researchers.
The CGRS-D program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of health, natural sciences and engineering and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.
By providing support for a high-quality research training experience to awardees, the program strives to foster impacts within and beyond the research environment.
Eligibility Requirements for Government of Canada Scholarship 2026
To be considered for the Government of Canada Scholarship, you must:
- Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons.
- Be international students currently enrolled in a PhD program at a Canadian university.
- have completed no more than 36 months of full-time doctoral study (including summer semesters) by December 31 of the year you apply.
Even those enrolled in joint programs (e.g. MD/PhD, MA/PhD, MBA/PhD) are eligible, as long as the program includes a significant research component such as a thesis or dissertation.
