The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at Kyoto University has officially opened its call for the 2026 Visiting Research Scholars Fellowship. This Japanese fellowship opportunity invites experienced scholars from around the globe to spend time conducting independent research in one of Japan’s most prominent interdisciplinary centers for Southeast Asian studies.
About the Fellowship
CSEAS offers approximately 14 fellowship positions each year to qualified researchers interested in studying topics related to Southeast Asia. Successful applicants will join the vibrant academic community in Kyoto and work closely with a network of scholars engaged in regional research. The fellowship duration typically ranges from three to six months, with six flexible starting dates available in 2026: May, June, July, August, September, and November. While applicants may propose a preferred start date, the final schedule will be determined based on availability.
The program is part of a broader effort by CSEAS to support innovative research, foster global scholarly exchange, and deepen understanding of Southeast Asian societies. Fellows are encouraged to actively participate in center events and contribute to CSEAS publications, such as the Southeast Asian Studies journal and the Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia.
Who Can Apply?
The fellowship is open to established scholars under the age of 65 with a strong research background. Exceptional researchers above this age may also be considered. Applicants must not be enrolled in a graduate or postdoctoral program at the time of application. A separate track is available for experienced librarians who wish to contribute to the center’s collections and networks.
Those who have previously held the CSEAS fellowship are required to wait at least six years after the completion of their previous term before reapplying.
What the Fellowship Offers?
The fellowship package includes a stipend to cover international travel, living costs in Kyoto, research expenses, and domestic travel within Japan. Fellows are expected to reside in Kyoto for the duration of the fellowship and are required to give a public lecture during their stay.
Additionally, fellows are considered employees of Kyoto University for the duration of their fellowship and are expected to comply with institutional policies and procedures.

- A curriculum vitae (maximum 5 pages), including a list of major publications
- A research proposal (approximately 2 double-spaced pages) using the designated form
- Two letters of recommendation sent directly by referees on institutional letterhead
