The Lauren Brown Fellowship honours the legacy of Lauren Alix Brown, a visionary editor, mentor, and advocate for equity in journalism. Established by her colleagues, family, and friends, in collaboration with the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), the fellowship supports women and nonbinary journalists from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds working in the United States.
Lauren Brown, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 37, served as a founding editor and director of special projects at Quartz Media. During her career, she championed journalism that centered marginalized voices and challenged conventional media narratives.
Her approach to digital journalism as both editor and writer was innovative and ahead of its time, helping to shape the modern media landscape. She believed deeply in storytelling that elevated the unheard, and in nurturing the talents of emerging journalists. The Lauren Brown Fellowship aims to continue this mission.
