Applications are open for a YOUNGO’s Just Transition Academy — the youth constituency officially recognized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The Just Transition Academy offers a unique opportunity for young leaders, activists, students, early-career professionals, and grassroots organizers who are passionate about shaping a fair and inclusive shift toward climate resilience and low-carbon development.
At a time when global societies are undergoing profound environmental, economic, and social changes, the idea of a just transition is more than a trendy phrase—it is a core pillar of climate equity. This academy seeks to empower young changemakers with the practical knowledge, strategic tools, and collaborative networks needed to advocate for people-centered and justice-oriented climate policies.
Participants will join a global pilot cohort in a dynamic virtual environment focused on capacity building, shared learning, and mobilizing collective impact.
This global program is open to applicants from all regions of the world who are between the ages of 18 and 35. It welcomes individuals already engaged in sustainability, climate activism, or community development, especially those with intentions to participate in COP30.
Applicants should be able to dedicate roughly 3 to 4 hours per week throughout the program, and they must be proficient in English, as all sessions will be held in that language. A reliable internet connection is necessary to attend online meetings and engage in activities. While previous involvement in environmental or social justice efforts—particularly within the UNFCCC—is preferred, it is not required.
The academy strongly encourages applications from individuals who come from historically marginalized backgrounds, including but not limited to Indigenous peoples, LGBTQIA+ communities, persons with disabilities, rural populations, and those from Least Developed Countries or Small Island Developing States. Inclusivity and diverse perspectives are central to this learning experience.
Over the course of seven weeks, selected participants will engage in a guided virtual program that explores just transition in sectors such as agriculture and energy, while also addressing systemic barriers like trade and financing. They will delve into current global dialogues, including the UNFCCC’s Just Transition Work Program and civil society’s calls ahead of COP30. Participants will benefit from networking with international experts, climate negotiators, activists, and other youth leaders, while also building advocacy skills to shape equitable policies at both local and global levels.
Those who complete the program will receive a certificate, gain access to mentorship opportunities, and be considered for future leadership or facilitation roles within the just transition movement. Graduates will also become part of an active international community of youth working for environmental justice.
Applications must be submitted by August 12, 2025. Selected candidates will be notified during the week of August 18, with the academy beginning in the first week of September and running through mid-October 2025. Sessions will be conducted virtually and include interactive workshops, group tasks, and independent reading assignments.
