About the Program

The APRI Young Talent Program is an international initiative designed to engage early-career professionals and recent graduates who are passionate about African policy research. Offered by the Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI), this recurring internship provides an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a dynamic, fast-growing think tank environment. Participants work directly with APRI program teams on research, advocacy, and knowledge production relevant to Africa’s policy landscape.

Each cohort is shaped around the institute’s current programmatic needs, offering interns the chance to contribute meaningfully to African-centered policy work while developing strong analytical and professional skills.

Key Responsibilities

Interns selected for the APRI Young Talent Program will support a range of activities, which may include:

  • Conducting background research, literature reviews, data analysis, and editorial assistance on various policy topics.
  • Supporting event coordination for conferences, webinars, and workshops.
  • Assisting in the creation and dissemination of digital content such as infographics, videos, blogs, and factsheets.
  • Providing general administrative assistance, including database management, meeting coordination, documentation, and grant reporting.
  • Contributing to stakeholder communication and outreach, including the development of policy briefings and advocacy materials.
  • Participating in monitoring and evaluation processes, documentation of best practices, and knowledge management across programs.

Tasks will be tailored to the candidate’s interests, skill set, and APRI’s evolving programmatic priorities.

For applicants based in Europe: Must be currently enrolled in a European university and able to complete a Pflichtpraktikum (mandatory internship).

For applicants based in Africa or elsewhere: Must have recently graduated or be between academic programs. Enrollment in a university is not required but candidates must be able to work in GMT+1 or GMT+2 time zones.

Strong research and analytical skills; experience in data visualization and quantitative analysis is an asset.

Excellent English writing and communication skills; proficiency in additional languages is a plus.

A proactive, self-directed work ethic with excellent time management and reliability.

Strong interpersonal skills and comfort working in multicultural, remote, or hybrid teams.

Completed graduate studies in a relevant discipline (e.g., Political Science, Economics, Environmental Studies, Public Policy, or International Relations).

Experience working in a policy, research, or advocacy setting.

Availability to complete part or all of the internship from one of APRI’s offices (Berlin or Abuja) is highly encouraged but not mandatory.

  • Initial Review – Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
  • Short Interview (10 minutes) – Selected candidates will have a check-in with the HR department to ask questions and confirm availability.
  • Program Interview – A full interview with a Head of Program or Team Lead.
  • Offer & Placement – Successful candidates will receive a formal offer and be placed within one of APRI’s active program teams.
